Colored Herd - Old Dairy Traits!
It is typically true that Guernseys, Jerseys, Brown Swiss, and basically your colored herd cows make more butterfat and higher protein levels in their milk. Guernseys are also known to fix beta-carotene in their milk! Milking Shorthorn cows are known for their mothering abilities and longevity. Ayreshires have been found to be somewhat more efficient grazers. While Holsteins typically milk more, it is the unique traits of cross-breeding all the breeds into a heartier, healthier herd that the Tryttens found to make the most sense. This new colored herd lived longer, required less attention, calved easier and were great mothers, and grazed better. This reduced our costs, and in the long run, actually created a more efficient and healthier herd. And in the end, we feel … created healthier MILK!
Grazing is Best!
Cattle make their own milk while grazing, and can become much healthier when they do so! They can pick and choose what they need in a mixed grass pasture. Some say even a weed may have a healing component that a cow might need on occasion. These words make sense! Sometimes it is better to stop and think about "what makes sense" versus following the "dairy industry herd" to a very wrong place! It also costs a lot less and is much better on the environment, to let the cows do the work rather than running tractors with mowers, rakes, and balers around!
Healthy Cows on Grass Pastures makes Healthier Milk - which makes Healthier People!
Many dairy farmers would have heated debate on this one! Dairy farmers don't like to think they are making anything but healthy milk, but we have experienced this one personally!
While making our mixed-breed herd in Alaska, and selling the raw milk through our cow-share program to happy customers, they came with testimonials like: "our kids didn't get sick when school started this year," "my son's acne cleared up," "we are no longer lactose intolerant," and much, much more!
